The Ann Street Gallery is pleased to present a new exhibit, The Green Wave: Sustainability & Found Object Exhibition, with an Artist Reception on Saturday, June 26, 2010 from 6 to 9 PM.
The “green wave” trend has reached massive status in the U.S. as websites crop up all over the internet, organizations take a contemporary stance focusing on ecology, and celebrities advocate for ecological changes. In this exhibition, through their work, ten artists: David Borenstein, Rik Catlow, Deborah Colotti, David Edgar, Janice Gordon, Brooke Holve, Julie Kornblum, Todd Knopke, Patianne Stevenson, and Stuart Wagner, work to communicate new meanings and interpretations about sustainability. Sustainability here means utilizing and amplifying resources without depleting or destroying their long-term promise. Of course, this definition is broad and far reaching, as sustainability also resonates with environmentalists and eco-artists. In particular, this exhibition raises the issues and questions of sustainability through individual experience and others based on their work with new materials and methodologies.
The works presented also raise worthy questions such as: How does art negotiate the subjects of sustainability? What does art tell us about development, growth and the use of our natural resources? To what extent is art itself a sustainable enterprise? And, more importantly, can art help us decide whether our lives are sustainable and/or make us more optimistic about the future. Here artists attempt to navigate through the paradox of having an environmentalist agenda, while remaining active as object makers and users of materials. Thus, in the end, recognizing and coming to terms with the hypocrisy of using materials that contribute to the degrading of the earth. However, the arts can provide contextual knowledge, as well as, evoke emotional and analytical response to our current environmental crisis. Therefore, it is our hope this exhibit can serve as an initiator, encouraging collaborative work on sustainability, while providing a space for cross-disciplinary dialogue.
The works will be on view through August 7, 2010.
The gallery is located at 104 Ann Street in Newburgh, and hours are Monday through Thursday 9 AM to 5 PM, and Friday through Saturday 11 AM to 5 PM.
